This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
