The megacity Rises to Dangerous Haze After Celebrations
On Tuesday morning residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" level.
Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements
Multiple areas of Delhi showed an pollution measurement over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the WHO.
Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x above healthy standards.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as colder weather sets in.
However recently, the recently formed local administration petitioned the highest court to request a modification of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Legal Decision and Implementation
To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, judges complied with the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific hours throughout the festival.
During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.
Many air quality sensors throughout Delhi recorded pollution spiking around late evening to the most severe levels seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.
Regional Implications
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on pollutants traveling from India following the festivities.
Chronic Pollution Issue
Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in the capital have remained as a serious problem for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
During Diwali, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been documented to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak records ever documented in Beijing, which was once considered as the world's most polluted urban center.
Diverse Pollution Sources
The problem in the city is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Throughout these areas, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air descends.
Public Health and Financial Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the capital region is enormous, according to multiple investigations.
The contaminated air results in elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing 10,000 early mortalities annually in the capital.
