France to begin intercepting small boats in English Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to support the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police representative states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
