A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
